A Backpack That Keeps Commuters Cool
Active cooling, controlled with one tap
V.I.T.L., a Seattle brand that re-engineers everyday products, wanted a backpack that keeps commuters cool. In 2022, we developed a cooling fan that integrates into the bag. It sends a breeze between the bag and the wearer's back.
Overview
The sweaty back problem
Backpacks trap heat against the body. On hot days, commuters often arrive with a sweaty back. V.I.T.L. wanted to change that with active airflow built into the bag.
Key successes
- Integrated an active cooling fan into a 28-liter commuter backpack
- Simplified control to a single button on the shoulder strap
- Tested in real commutes: walking, biking and public transit
- Featured by Yanko Design as the first active cooling modular commuter backpack
Approach
One button, no learning curve
We wanted cooling to feel effortless. Holding the button on the shoulder strap powers on the fan, and each tap raises the speed. A medium-sized power bank fits inside a dedicated interior pocket.
The solution
Built for the daily commute
- Active cooling fan→channels air over the back, neck and shoulders
- Single-tap control on the strap→adjust speed without taking the bag off
- Modular compartments→adapt storage to each day
Impact
Powerful, yet whisper quiet
We tested the fan in everyday commutes, from walking and biking to public transit and quiet rooms. It stayed whisper quiet while still moving real air. The V.I.T.L. backpack sells for US$199 on V.I.T.L.'s site.
