Helping Toddlers Take Their First Bites On Their Own
A spoon that grows with little hands
VIIDA, the family brand from Taiwanese metal manufacturer Jiin Ming, makes antibacterial stainless-steel tableware for children. We worked with VIIDA from concept through production on a learning spoon for early self-feeding.
Overview
Self‑feeding starts with the right grip
Children often start feeding themselves around one year old, but most gain real control of utensils only around age three. In between, a spoon has to forgive clumsy grips while helping little hands grow stronger.
Key successes
- Shaped a grip that supports both fist and tripod grasps
- Combined grip and protective cover in one silicone sleeve, cutting extra parts
- Paired a 304L antibacterial stainless-steel head with a removable silicone handle
- Launched at NT$380 through VIIDA's store, Pinkoi and momo
Approach
One sleeve, two jobs
VIIDA's existing metal spoon is symmetrical. Instead of adding parts, we designed one silicone sleeve that works as both a grip and a protective cover. Fewer parts make the spoon easier to use, clean and store.
The solution
Designed for every way a child holds a spoon
- Grip shape→supports fist and tripod grasps, strengthening hand muscles
- Removable silicone handle→comes off for washing, and the steel spoon keeps working as the child grows
- Pastel colors→playful but calm, matching VIIDA's soft brand
Impact
From concept to the family table
The Learning Spoon sells for NT$380 through VIIDA's online store, Pinkoi and momo. It also comes in sets with VIIDA's antibacterial bowl and suction base.
