The design challenge
More Treatments Usually Mean More Products.
Professional beauty and spa experiences often involve different tools designed for different treatments. Bringing that versatility into the home creates an immediate product challenge.
How do you provide multiple experiences without creating multiple devices, multiple chargers, multiple interfaces and unnecessary complexity?
Framed here as the design challenge inherent in the product brief — not as a client research finding.
The usual trade-off
The desired experience
The challenge wasn't adding more features. It was making multiple treatments feel like one product.
Platform thinking
What If One Product Could Become Many?
Instead of designing several independent beauty devices, Gizmospring approached TOTALSPA as a platform — one core architecture supporting multiple treatment experiences, while preserving what a single product would owe its user:
ONE CORE ARCHITECTURE

Platform thinking turns a collection of features into an ecosystem.
The modular interface
One Device. Multiple Personalities.
Modular magnetic treatment heads let the core device adapt to different treatment experiences — the same sealed architecture becoming five different tools.
But magnetism isn't a feature. It answers a user-experience problem: the user should be able to move from one treatment to another without feeling like they are assembling or reconfiguring a complicated machine.

Verified · Interface engineering
Sealed core
The electronics core is sealed against water and product ingress, so wet-environment use was designed in from the start — not patched on later.
Pending verification · Technical record
- —How head alignment is achieved
- —How heads are mechanically retained
- —How the user confirms correct attachment
- —How power and signals pass between core and head
- —How attachment force was calibrated
These interface mechanisms are documented here only once verified with the project team — never invented.
Modularity only works when the user doesn't experience the complexity behind it.
Hidden engineering
The Complexity Had to Go Somewhere.
If the experience feels simple, the engineering usually isn't.
Integrating multiple treatment modes into a compact system doesn't remove complexity — it relocates it. The underlying architecture has to manage it invisibly, so none of it surfaces in the user's hands.

01 / The tension
Combining devices is easy. Combining them without compromise is the work.
The obvious way to put a spa into one device is to shrink several machines into one shell and let each lose a little. TOTALSPA's objective ruled that out from the start: a complete multi-head spa system, in one compact and intuitive home device, without compromising performance. That single sentence turns a styling problem into a systems problem.
T01
A spa is many machines
Every treatment, made well, wants its own geometry — its own interface, its own envelope, its own logic. Put them all in one shell and each one gets a compromise.
T02
Performance can't be averaged
The objective was integration without compromising performance. A diluted all-in-one is worse than two devices done properly — the easy version of this product fails both promises.
T03
It lives on a bathroom shelf
Water, steam, creams, daily handling. One device has to survive all of it and still feel like a single, intuitive object — not a cabinet of equipment pretending to be one.
02 / The idea
The platform is the product.
Instead of one device with many modes bolted in, Gizmospring designed a core with a magnetic interface — and a family of modular treatment heads, each carrying a complete treatment experience.
The core stays compact, intuitive and fully sealed. The heads make it a spa. The smart charging base makes it a system that lives on the shelf as one considered object, not a pile of devices.
One integrated product — many treatments. Nothing averaged, nothing bolted on.
03 / One system
Four parts. One architecture.
Every one of these decisions changes the others. The heads define the interface; the interface defines the core; the core defines the base. This is systems integration — the discipline of refusing to design any part in isolation.
Treatment heads
Modular magnetic heads, each a complete engineered treatment assembly — not an accessory. Together they are what makes the device a spa.
The magnetic interface
The seam where the platform lives or dies. Heads seat with certainty, so performance is decided here — every time a head goes on.
Sealed core
The internal electronics sit in one fully sealed envelope — planned from concept, not retrofitted — so the core can live where a spa lives.
Smart charging base
The system's home: docks and charges the core, anchors the platform on the shelf, and keeps the whole system feeling like one object.
04 / The magnetic interface
The platform succeeds or fails at one seam.
A modular magnetic interface is the small, quiet decision the entire product rests on. If it feels uncertain, the system feels like equipment. If it feels inevitable, the system feels like one product. These were the requirements it had to earn.
Attach without ritual
A head goes on by feel. No alignment procedure, no instructions — the magnetic seating should announce itself, so the device never asks the user to think about it.
Seat the same way, every time
Every attachment has to land in the same position with the same certainty. Consistency at this seam is what allows performance to live in the heads.
Carry a complete treatment
Moving the treatment into the head only works if each head is engineered as a complete assembly — the treatment is the head, not a diluted mode of the core.
05 / Sealed within
The electronics live in one sealed envelope.
A spa device lives around water, steam and daily handling. Gizmospring's answer was total: the internal electronics are fully sealed, in one envelope, with no serviceable internals to compromise it.
Sealing performance is covered under project verification. No specific rating or test result is published here.
Sealing is architecture
A fully sealed core is decided at concept, not retrofitted. Every joint, connection and charging path is part of one sealing plan — there is no version of this device where sealing is added later.
No unnecessary openings
Sealed internals mean the core presents almost no entry points to the environment it lives in. Reliability is achieved by not creating the problem in the first place.
The base keeps the core closed
Because the smart charging base handles docking and charging, the core never has to open for daily life. The system stays sealed precisely because of how it is charged.
Engineered for the real room
Beauty Devices Don't Live in Laboratories.
A home spa device is engineered around the environment people actually use it in — steam, moisture, busy hands, crowded counters. TOTALSPA's fully sealed internal electronics are the architectural answer to that reality.
Sealing validation is covered under project verification. No specific IP rating or water-test result is published here.

Moisture is the operating environment
A home spa device lives on the bathroom counter, next to running water and steam. It is engineered for that room — not for a laboratory bench.
Fully sealed internal electronics
TOTALSPA's internal electronics are fully sealed. Sealing is designed into the architecture from concept, not retrofitted — no unnecessary openings, no serviceable internals to compromise the envelope.
Interfaces between modular components
Five magnetic heads dock to one core. Every head-to-core interface is an environmental seam as much as a mechanical one — the attachment path is part of the sealing plan.
Materials for skin, water and wear
Material selection answers where the product lives: repeated skin contact, humidity, and daily handling — not just how the device renders in a presentation.
Charging contacts stay out of daily life
The smart docking base handles charging, so the core never opens a port for daily use. The system stays sealed precisely because of how it is charged.
Daily handling, not demo handling
The device is picked up, docked, and carried between rooms by hand. Structural and finish decisions are made for years of that routine.
Human-centered engineering means designing for where the product actually lives — not just how it looks in a rendering.
06 / The base
The base is the spa's front desk.
In a platform, the charging base is not an accessory — it is infrastructure. It is what lets the core stay sealed, and it is what keeps an entire spa system behaving like one disciplined object in the home.
It charges the core
The smart charging base is how the platform powers itself. The core never needs a port fumbled for — it comes home and it is charging.
It gives the system an address
One place on the shelf. Without a base, a multi-head system drifts into being a drawer of parts. With it, the platform stays one considered object.
It makes it feel like one product
The final test of the experience: core, heads and base sitting together read as a single premium object — an at-home spa, not a collection of devices.
The complete system
Even Storage Was Part of the Experience.
Charging and storage are usually afterthoughts — the cable in a drawer, the heads wherever they land. Here, the smart charging base is treated as part of the product itself, so the complete system — core docked, heads organized — is designed as one experience, on and off the shelf.

Charging
The smart docking base powers the core. It comes home, and it is charging — no port to fumble for, no cable left on the counter.
Treatment-head storage
The base gives five magnetic heads a designed place to live. The system stays organized as a product, not as a drawer of parts.
Readiness for use
Because the core charges at rest, the spa is ready when the user reaches for it. The system maintains itself between uses.
One coherent object
Core, heads and base read as a single premium system — an at-home spa, not a collection of devices sharing a shelf.
A platform isn't just the device. It's every interaction around it.
07 / One intuitive experience
The system should disappear into the ritual.
The brief said intuitive, and that word is a constraint, not an adjective. Swapping a treatment head should feel like the device changing purpose — never like assembling equipment. The moment a user thinks about alignment, modes or parts, the experience has already failed. Every engineering decision in this case study — magnetic seating, sealed core, docking base — was made to protect that one feeling.
The interface · In use08 / Approach
Design the system, then the parts.
Platform products fail when parts are designed first and the system is hoped for later. This program ran in the other direction: the whole was specified, then every part earned its place inside it.
Frame it as a platform
Define the system boundary first: core, interface, heads, base — one product with one experience, designed as a whole.
Split the system
Decide what lives in the core and what lives in each head — the architectural split that keeps every treatment uncompromised.
Engineer the magnetic interface
Make the seam certain: heads seat by feel, in the same position, with the same confidence, every time.
Seal the core
Place the electronics in one fully sealed envelope, planned from concept — no serviceable internals, no retrofitted sealing.
Give it a home
Design the smart charging base as dock and anchor, so the system lives on the shelf as one object.
Prove it as one product
Evaluate the result the way the user meets it: many treatments, one system, one intuitive experience.

10 / What this project demonstrates
TOTALSPA asked how an entire spa fits into one device. The answer was a platform — modular magnetic heads, a sealed core and a smart charging base, engineered as one system so that integration never cost performance, and complexity never reached the user.
The hardest products aren't always the ones that do one extraordinary thing. Sometimes they're the ones that make many complicated things feel like one simple experience.
