01 / The moment

Suddenly, an Everyday Behavior Became a Global Priority.

Hand cleaning had always been something people did without thinking. The outbreak made it a behavior the entire world was re-examining — and revealed a design opportunity: the routines people wanted to practice and the products they had to practice them with had drifted apart.

Changing World

01

The COVID-19 outbreak changed daily behavior around the world and brought renewed attention to hand hygiene.

Changing Behavior

02

People everywhere began re-examining an act they had always performed without thinking.

New Need

03

More deliberate cleaning depended on time, technique and a sink — none of which travel well.

Product Opportunity

04

A global behavior had changed faster than the products that served it. That gap was the brief.

The starting question — NION & Gizmospring

How can we make more deliberate hand cleaning easier to practice wherever people go?

Sometimes innovation begins when the world changes faster than existing products do.

02 / The behavioral insight

What Could Everyday Handwashing Learn From the Way Professionals Scrub?

One source of inspiration came from observing how doctors and medical professionals approach hand scrubbing before surgery: not simply rinsing the palms, but deliberately cleaning different surfaces, fingers, nails and difficult-to-reach areas. Purity Hands does not reproduce that protocol — it carries its behavioral principle into everyday life.

Professional Behavior

01

Thorough · Deliberate · Multiple hand areas

Before surgery, medical professionals scrub rather than rinse — deliberately working different surfaces, fingers, nails and difficult-to-reach areas.

Design Principle

02

Make more deliberate scrubbing easier

The lesson Gizmospring took was behavioral, not clinical: if deliberateness is what makes the scrub thorough, deliberateness is what a product should make easy.

Consumer Product

03

Portable · Simple · Intuitive

Purity Hands translated that principle into an accessible consumer tool — deliberate mechanical scrubbing, carried in a pocket.

We didn't copy a medical tool. We translated a better behavior.

Purity Hands is a mechanical hand-scrubbing tool. It is not a medical device, does not reproduce a surgical scrub protocol, and achieves no clinical sterilization. No surgical-level disinfection, antimicrobial or infection-prevention claims are made.

03 / The design opportunity

Thoroughness Wasn't the Problem. Availability Was.

People already wanted to clean their hands more carefully — the outbreak had taken care of that. What was missing was a tool that made the thorough version as available as the careless one.

A

Portable by definition

The objective was a portable scrubbing device that was easy to use and occupied minimal space — cleaning thoroughness that could live in a pocket, a bag, a desk drawer.

B

Built on tactile research

The project drew directly on Gizmospring's earlier tactile-map work — the discipline of mapping how different surfaces of the body need to be treated differently, first developed for facial cleansing.

C

Relevant beyond skincare

Although developed through a beauty brand, the project was intentionally considered relevant beyond skincare — a hand-cleaning aid for anyone, anywhere, not a category product.

A behavior without a product is an unmet need. The opportunity was to design the tool the new behavior was already asking for.

04 / Tactile exploration

Not Every Part of the Hand Needs the Same Surface.

Earlier Gizmospring tactile research informed the cleaning architecture: the hand is not one surface but several — and each area presents its own physical cleaning challenge.

Palms

Broad surface contact

The largest terrain — suited to a wide bristle field built for coverage.

Fingers

Curved and narrow surfaces

Rounded profiles that a flat texture only touches at a single point.

Between Fingers

Difficult-to-reach spaces

Tight gaps that ordinary washing tends to miss entirely.

Nails

Smaller areas requiring more targeted contact

Fine details where deliberate, precise contact matters most.

Those different challenges led to a gradient bristle architecture — bristles of different lengths and densities, mapped to the areas they serve — rather than one uniform silicone texture.

One surface couldn't clean every surface the same way.

05 / The portable product

A Hygiene Tool Only Helps Away From Home If People Actually Bring It With Them.

Portability was treated as a fundamental design requirement rather than an afterthought — a constraint the product had to satisfy from the first sketch.

01

Fit in the palm

The pad's size and geometry were set by the hand that would hold it.

02

Fit in a pocket or bag

Small enough to travel with everything people already carry.

03

Remain stable during use

A subtle curved surface kept the pad seated in the palm, so cleaning pressure went into the hand, not into holding the tool.

04

Protect the cleaning surface during transport

The surface that does the work had to survive the pocket between uses.

05

Manage residual moisture after use

The product had to stay pleasant to pick up again after a wash.

Travel pattern language

The exterior pattern was inspired by suitcases and travel-friendly products — creating an intuitive visual association with portability. People already trust objects that look like they travel.

Stability in the palm

A subtle curved surface helped the pad remain stable in the palm during use — reinforcing control exactly where cleaning gets deliberate.

Fig. 11 · Palm stability

The best portable product isn't simply small. It's designed around everything that happens before and after use.

06 / Between the fingers

Design for the Places People Miss.

The flexible silicone brush was designed so it could wrap around individual fingers and slide between them — physical access to the areas a flat rinse passes over.

Flat cleaning

Palm only

  • Contact concentrated on the largest, easiest surface
  • Curved and narrow surfaces barely touched
  • Between-finger spaces and nail edges passed over

Three-dimensional cleaning

Around fingers · Between fingers · Around nails

  • The flexible pad wraps around individual fingers
  • Thin enough to slide between them
  • Bristles stay in contact along curved surfaces and nail edges

The point is interaction, not laboratory claims: the brush physically reaches surfaces that ordinary washing tends to skip. No microbial-removal performance is claimed without test data.

Good human-centered design starts by noticing where everyday behavior falls short.

07 / After the wash

Portable Meant Solving What Happens After Washing Too.

Once a wet silicone scrubber goes inside a bag or pocket, a new problem appears: how do you protect the cleaning surface without simply trapping moisture around it?

Ventilation

Portable storage

A damp scrubber becomes a pocketable object

Gizmospring developed a silicone protective case around the brush, and ventilation holes around the exterior were designed to help prevent accumulation of residual water droplets after cleaning. No antimicrobial or drying performance is claimed beyond that design intent — without test data, the cover is described by what it was built to do, not by measured results.

Every solution creates a new question. Good product design follows the experience all the way through.

08 / The everyday habit

The Best Hygiene Behavior Is the One You Have With You.

The pocket-friendly size was intended to encourage users to carry the product — and take hand cleaning more seriously as a result. A tool that lives in a pocket changes the standard of the moment, not just the standard at home.

Technology should follow the experience — and this experience had to fit in a pocket.

09 / Deliberate simplicity

Sometimes the Right Product Doesn't Need Electronics.

Purity Hands addressed the opportunity through a deliberately simple silicone product — no batteries, no sensors, no app, no connectivity. Everything the product needed to do, it does mechanically.

Geometry

A curved form mapped to the palm — every dimension drawn from the hand that holds it.

Tactile architecture

A gradient bristle system zoned for palms, fingers and nails.

Flexibility

Silicone that wraps, slides and reaches where flat tools cannot.

Portability

A pocketable object with a ventilated cover — complete between uses.

Behavior

Designed around the habit it wanted to create, not around connectivity.

Innovation isn't measured by how much technology a product contains. It's measured by how well it solves the problem.

The brief wasn't the starting point. The problem was.

11 / The outcome

A Small Product Built Around a Much Bigger Behavior Change.

The result was a compact silicone hand-scrubbing tool — designed around portability, tactile cleaning and everyday use.

01

Gradient bristles

Bristles of different lengths and densities, zoned to address the different areas of the hand they serve.

02

Flexible geometry

Silicone that bends and wraps, allowing interaction around individual fingers and between them.

03

Palm-sized form

A form factor scaled to the hand, supporting portability as a core requirement rather than a bonus.

04

Ventilated protective cover

A case developed around the brush, addressing storage after use — keeping the object pocketable between cleans.

Beyond the category

The original project also recognized that although Purity Hands emerged through a beauty brand, the underlying opportunity extended beyond skincare into broader everyday hygiene behavior. The object serves a habit, not a shelf.

Claims transparency

Portable hand-cleaning aid, developed with NION during the COVID-19 outbreak

Verified

Mechanical scrubbing design — pattern language, gradient bristles, flexible silicone, ventilated cover

Verified

Any disease prevention, antimicrobial performance or clinical effectiveness

Not claimed

Purity Hands is a mechanical hand-scrubbing tool. No disease-prevention, antimicrobial or clinical effectiveness is claimed — those would require laboratory or regulatory evidence Gizmospring does not present here.

The solution wasn't to make handwashing more complicated. It was to make more deliberate cleaning easier to carry with you.

12 / What this project demonstrates

Purity Hands shows how Gizmospring works when the world changes mid-project — reading a shifting behavior, translating a professional principle into a consumer object, and delivering a complete, pocketable system with NION.
